Laurelight Hill

Comprised entirely of aristocratic estates surrounding the Laurel Spring and its initial tributaries.  Below is a list of the more prominent noble families living in Caliphas.

  • Redcliff

    • Owners of the ancient and sprawling Renishaw Estate; known for its large hedge maze and imposing stone architecture.
    • Hold a near monopoly on the trade fleets of Caliphas, and highly wealthy as a result.
    • Subject to some derogatory comments about merchant class nature of their business
    • Guests from all manner of exotic lands visit often on business
    • Famed for their founders’ actions in the Shining Crusade
    • Politically neutral since their humiliation in supporting the failed Scholar’s Revolt 150 years ago
  •     Lowls

  • The Count of Versex resides in Lowls House, an estate on Laurelight Hill, when he has business in Caliphas.

    • Lowls House is relatively restrained, embodying the understatement and impeccable taste of old money, in contrast to the nouveau-riche who need to remind everyone of their wealth.
    • Many of the staff Lowls House are from families that have served the Lowls family for generations, their loyalty is exceeded only by their discretion.
    •  The Count Lowls rarely uses the estate since his withdrawal from society in the last year. His son, Aetherton, may occasionally be found here. As the unmarried heir of the Count of Versex, Aetherton rarely lacks for invitations to society events.
    •  The staff of Lowls House reside on the premises of the estate, most regard the lack of a commute and vastly improved security of residing on Laurelight Hill as significant perks.
  • Lethean Manor: Countess Carmilla Caliphvaso, ruler of both Caliphas city and county, makes her home within this palace of crimson f lowers and ruby glass. Her frequent galas number among the most prestigious social events in the city, and regularly include invitations to members of the lower classes who have managed to capture the countess’s attentions.
  • Rabivisich:

    • Tariff collectors, old line of secretaries and treasurers
    • Regal estate of sculpted bushes and tall stone walls
    • Employ guards trained in the Leipstadt guardsman school
    • Rumored to have deadly traps to deter vindictive peasants
    • Husband and wife (Ilya and Stefka). The husband has softened with age under Stefka’s influence. No children, but Stefka longs for one. They’ve recently considered adopting from the Steel Steward Orphanage in North Cushing.
  • Stradeu:

    • Owners of Ravenwood Furnishings
    • Matron (Consola) is known to travel. Rumored to be member of the Pathfinder society. Husband (Mascal) deals with the day-to-day business of Ravenwood.
    • Estate grounds are filled with avian-themed works.Iron crows crafted into the gates, great wooden bird sculptures.
    • Have two children that go to Blackwood Academy. (Gabriele and Montador)
  • Poltyas (of the hunting grounds fame):

    • Harran is of course the head of the family, but great aunt Lacy still lives on the premises enjoying her son’s work. Some say she influenced it heavily.
    • Their dogs can frequently be seen running freely on the grounds, if one looks past the numerous signs warning of dogs and against trespassers.  Some say the Poltyas even own a hell hound.
  • Lynyse:

    • Philanthropists – responsible for restoration and upkeep of Palace of the Voices
    • Reynard and Juliana Lynyse are favorites in Caliphas, likable, generous and well connected, partly due to their remarkable ability to remember personal details and express what appears to be sincere interest
    • Estate is tasteful, but adequately protected, but magically enhanced and lit sculpture to provide security.Three daughter attends the Caliphvaso School for Girls (Elspath, Muriel, and Tressa).
    • Elspath is rumored to be a talented arcane caster, Muriel – the youngest – an awkward but perceptive young teen, and Tressa is incredibly smart and bold, but gets herself in trouble in various incidents, sometimes involving the Blackwood Academy.
  • Venianminov (Veni lines)

    • Fashion mogul Fedko, Varisian born, moved here as a child to bring fashion to the east, disregarding common “sense” at the time that said fashion rolls from the east to the west like a wave, with the exception of the Absalom spring.
    • His estate is the most open, bordered by flowering plants on a slight incline. The bushes closest to the street flower in the spring, with the next row flowering in summer, and so on. The grounds do hold miniature towers (which double as garden sheds), on which 2 guards are stationed at all times.Fedko is said to be paranoid that the competition seeks to steal his secrets of the upcoming fashions or fabrics.
    • Fedko loves a big family. He has countless cousins and aunts, uncles and grandparents in Varisia. Here in Ustalav, though, he only counts his wife, Ninete, as his close family, as well as, of course, Mateo, Zachar, Simona, Ihrin, Borja, and Chasek (in order of age). They each have their interests, only Zachar taking interest in the family business and Simona taking interest in fashion as an art – often acting as secret inspiration for Fedko.
  • Sunbright:

    • Sorely made fortunes through expeditions in Mwangi and Osiri.
    • Well paid mercenaries guard the stone walls at all times.
    • His three sons attend Blackwood Academy (Fullet, Ansel, and Casner) and his young daughter, Evelyn, attends the Caliphvaso School for Girls.
    • His wife, Kiltey, tends to the house when he is away.
  • Santorin:

    • Rental barons – mostly tenements and small business owners
    • Gismondo has many sons who mostly tend to themselves, his wife having long ago left him for a Taldoran painter and musician.Vasko is the oldest and enjoys brawls as much as he does using his station to belittle the lower classes.Francar is a serious man, but frequently can be found with Vasko getting himself in more trouble than he knows what to do with.Lorio is only 20 but he’s been caught in more beds, many of them married, than most people have in gold on them. Pachek studies hard and consequently earns high marks at Blackwood. Malesh is a somewhat gullible but honest man, unremarkable in almost every way.And Yuri appears to be just as successful as Pachek, but he spends most of his time out in the city, not in the study halls of Blackwood.
